Self-guided Gulf of Gokova

Carian Trail

The Carian Trail is an 800 km long distance walking path exploring the South Western corner of Turkey through the modern provinces of Muğla and Aydın. The trail is named after the Carian civilization discovering a region rich in ancient ruins and history, stone paved caravan roads and mule path connecting villages from the coast to a mountainous hinterland. Pine forest cloak mountain slopes with olive terraces and almond grove in the valley's make up an important part of the regions economy. The trail accesses a lesser known and unspoiled region full of colour and tradition along with spectacular scenery.


Day 1Transfer Dalaman to Akyaka 

After your arrival to Dalaman Airport, you will be transferred to Akyaka (1 hr). The files and the details about your trip will be ready for you in your hotel. 

Overnight in Caretta Pension, Akyaka 

Day 2. Walk Akyaka - Turnalı 15 km

You will start walking directly from the hotel to the market place and take the route into the pine forest. The route goes through the forest passing by some small hamlets followed by the scent of the pine trees. The day finishes in small village of  Turnalı. Transfer to Çardak Restaurant for an overnight in a bungalow. This is a nice spot by the sea.

DAY 3. HIKE Turnalı - Sarnıç - 12 km

The hike starts with a long climb up giving rewarding views of Gulf of Gokova and Datça Peninsula. Reaching an altitude of 700m, the trail passes through a mystic pine forest. High upon the plain is Sarnıç Village with a fertile fields. As there is no accommodation here, we transfer to the heavenly bay of Akbük.

DAY 4. HIKE Sarnıç - Akbük 12 km

Transfer up to Sarnıç Village (11 km). After taking a walk around the village which is totally away from tourism, take the dirt road through the pine trees. The trail has some nice views of the coast. The route carries on a caravan trail heading down to Datcağız Hamlet. The route finishes with a nice swim in Akbük.

DAY 5. HIKE Akbük - Ören 15 km 

The walk starts directly from the pension rising up Akbük bay. Leaving the blue of the sea behind, the route turns inland for through the agricultural fields and the olive trees. With mix of dirt roads and paths the trail reaches Alatepe Village. There is also a take off point in this village for the paragliders. The route carries on a caravan trail with views of Ören down below. Walk finishes by the hotel in Ören.

DAY 6. HIKE Türkevleri - Bozalan 13 km

Check out from the hotel. With a short transfer, we arrive at Türkevleri to start our hike. Winding up through low vegetation, the path takes us up for nice views of the Aegean. Through the pine trees we arrive at Bozalan Village. This village is famous for its carpets with natural dies. It is possible to see women weaving their local patterns knot by knot.  A short transfer takes us to Çökertme Village by the seaside.

HIKE Bozalan - Çakıllıyalı 14 km

Check out of the hotel.  The hike starts from Bozalan passing through some old terraces and houses. The old caravan trail takes us to Gökbel village which is also famous for its carpets. Having tea for refreshment in the village center, we carry on to our hike with views of the sea. The day ends as we walk into our small pension by the seaside in Çakıllıyalı.

DAY 8. HIKE Çakıllıyalı - Çiftlik 18 km

We start our day directly from the pension. This old trail has not been used for some long time until the opening of the Carian Trail. The endulating route passes through many intact beaches and coves. Through the maquis, pine trees, olive grooves, and strawberry trees, the trail is quite diverse. It is possible that we will see villagers collecting their olives. The path takes us to the byzantine settlement of Kisebükü and then to Çiftlik. Transfer to pension in Kızılağaç

Dinner & Overnight in Hayal Meyal.

DAY 9HIKE Çiftlik - Bodrum 20 km
Transfer back to Çiftlik. Today’s hike passes through some remote villages and hamlets. Mostly through the olive grooves, the trail shows us the different lifestyle in half an hour distance to Bodrum. Fantastic views of Bodrum Castle accompany us before we walk into our hotel in Bodrum. This is the perfect spot for taking some time of.

Overnight in Mia Boutique Hotel

DAY 10HIKE Pedasa - Bodrum 10 km

You will be transferred to Pedasa. After taking a walk around the site, carry on towards Bodrum with fantastic views of Bodrum Castle. The path descends down to ancient theatre of Halicarnassos. Walk to Myndos Gate, the Mouseleum and Bodrum Castle which is one of the best underwater archeology museums in the world.

DAY 11Transfer to Bodrum Airport

Transfer to Bodrum Airport.

Main Baggage is transferred on to next nights’ accommodation.


In April daytime temps reach the low twenties (centigrade), mostly sunny but still chances of rain. In May the temperature rises to late twenties and less chance of rain.
Evenings can still be quite cool in early April.

From mid September through October, mainly sunny day with temps in mid twenties and warm evenings cooling down later in the season.
